EXPRESSION OF INTEREST IN ENROLMENT

AT GREYSTANES YEAR 7, 2009

In 2009, Greystanes High School plans to have six classes available for Year 7 students. The classes established will be a high achievers class for students who have demonstrated high level performance, knowledge and skills and are capable of working independently, a number of classes for capable students who may need more guidance and direction and a class which provides support and learning assistance. Students who have English as a Second Language (ESL) will be placed in an English class where assistance is provided until they are ready to work in English classes at their level of ability. Other assistance will be provided in all key learning areas.

In summary, it is proposed to run six classes with gifted and talented education a priority across the learning spectrum. The maximum number of places offered in the first round will be 170. Students who are out of area will be placed on a waiting list if they are unsuccessful at gaining a place in the first round. Our focus is on the development of a learning culture where students have the opportunity to excel and reach their individual potential.

How do I gain a place for my child at Greystanes High School?

This question is answered by completing an Expression of Interest form provided by the local primary schools. If a child is in area, then a place will be available. Parents and Primary Principals need to complete all the details on the enrolment form that assists in placing each student in the appropriate class.

Out of area placements will be made based on the following specific criteria:

Student's academic performance

Student' sporting skills and interests

Student's performance in artistic areas of music, drama, visual and creative arts

Other supporting criteria that will be considered are:

Siblings already enrolled at the school who are in the mainstream

Proximity and access to the school

Recommendation of previous principal

Compassionate circumstances

Availability of subjects or combination of subjects (for students in Years 9-12)

Safety and supervision of the student before and after school

When enrolment forms are distributed it is important for the selection committee to have as much information as possible from the school and family as possible. Please complete the application form outlining the demonstrated skills and abilities of the applicant using the stated criteria.

I look forward to your application and the opportunity for Greystanes High School to assist your child to achieve their academic, sporting and cultural potential.

M Glenday - Principal
