Study is the work initiated by students themselves to revise topics already completed in class. The purpose of study is to consolidate understanding, prepare for exams and broaden learning.

The Study Ideas folder has been developed by the school to help students with their homework and study. The folder can be found on the school's intranet at:

Students: Study Ideas and Careers Folder/.

Ideas for Study!

Some senior students share their ideas for successful study

"It is important to do something rather than nothing"

"Organise and manage your time"

"Move study time to suit fit around your other commitments"

"Use teamwork for study- more fun, more rewarding"

"Use visualisation techniques to remember key information"

"Make sure you understand things as you learn them- ask questions when needed"

"Don't cram! Schedule time for homework, assessments, study, other stuff etc"

"When researching extra information, use more than one source for resource such as internet and books"

Try the 4 Pen Summary Method

The 4 Pen Summary method is an effective way for you to identify:

  • what you remember about a topic you have already studied
  • the important information you have forgotten
  • common mistakes which you should try to avoid and quotes or formulas which you should remember
  • extra information beyond the material taught in class.

Pen 1.  On a blank piece of paper write down all the important information you can recall. Use headings and subheadings as appropriate.

Pen 2.  Now look back at your notes from class, homework and assignments. In a different colour pen, record any key points you have forgotten.

Pen 3.  Using a third colour pen, write down any common mistakes you make and any key quotes or examples you might use in an extended answer.

Pen 4.  Using a fourth colour pen, you might like to write down any extra information you find on the topics you have studied in class.

Predicting Exam Questions

Can you predict what might be in the exams?

Studying for exams requires you to reorganise your learning from class into an exam preparation format. This means trying to work out which learning is likely to be of most importance.

To reorganise your learning as part of exam preparation:

  1. Make a list of all topics to be covered in the exam. (Check this with your teacher).
  2. For each topic complete the following table.

Make a list of possible questions that could be in the exam. Do this for each topic.

Write dot points that you would include in your answer. Start with your most important points.

Identify any quotes, examples or formulas that you would include in your answer.

  1. Use the table to answer practice questions. Turn your dot points into topic sentences. Use the quotes, examples and formulas in your body paragraphs.

 Web Links and Study!

Herald in the classroom

The school also has access to the "Herald in the Classroom" section which allows students to search for articles relevant to different subjects you are studying. To access the site select Greystanes HS from the drop-down menu at the top of the site and enter the password, 'greystanes1'. Click on this link to view http://www.classroom.smh.com.au/

ClassScoop is designed for students in years 7&8. Click on this link to view http://www.classscoop.sunherald.com.au/index.asp?/index.html.

Local Libraries

Many students utilise the resources of local and university libraries to get more information about the topics they are studying. One of the good things about these libraries are that their catalogues are online. This allows you to look for books and other resources before you get there. Go with friends and enjoy time studying togther.

 Exam Speak and Practice Papers!

Understanding what is meant by an exam question requires you to be able know the keywords used to phrase a question. The Board of Studies (BOS) site contains an updated glossary of words written by those who write the SC exam and other useful information such as copies of past papers that you can use to practice.  http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/schoolcertificate/index.html
